Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is with great pleasure that I officially announce the retirement of dm designs... and proudly introduce the company's new identity as limefish studio!

I am thrilled to be moving forward with all limefish branding from here on out. All the great projects, custom artwork, and inspiration will remain the same.... the name has just been refreshed to better reflect the overall style and long-term goals of the company.

limefish studio is a creative independent business that thrives on artistic versatility

and specializes in creating custom artwork for clients.

This decision may confuse some of you, but rest assured, I have given it much careful consideration. In fact, the brainstorming of limefish studio began well over a year ago! Sadly, dm designs was created slightly more out of convenience than out of a passion for the branding. I believe the original logo development was something I worked on during college, and then as my independent art sales began to rise, my sales in boutiques began, and the desire for a blog arose, I realized I needed a brand. The look and feel of dm designs changed slightly over time and I became increasingly more pleased with how things were coming together, but I honestly never loved it. I was so busy working on projects for clients however, that I could not find the time for myself. It was easier to continue as it was. Also, over time, I battled with the actual word "designs" because my portfolio and services were rapidly epanding and the word seemed restricting. I tried to make adjustments by adding other tag words along the bottom, but truthfully was bothered by the clutter. I disliked the feeling of being half of what I really wanted to be.

Also, I began thinking about a lot of my ultimate goals for the future. I wanted to have my artwork featured in boutiques, and I've happily achieved that. Now, at some point down the road (even if it's 30 years from now) I want to have my own storefront. Ideally, it would be a boutique and studio, where I can not only take custom orders and sell current artwork, but can also have my own studio space or even a shared studio space to offer art lessons and classes. Big dreams, I know! :) But.... with all that said, the more I thought about it, the more I knew that it would never be called dm something.... It would definitely be limefish.

I needed a name that was more whimsical and memorable. While I won't share the full details of my personal attachment to the name, I definitely think limefish reflects the fun nature of the artwork I create. It's slightly random, I know, but so am I. It has the childlike qualities that reflect the nurseries I paint, the baby shower gifts I do, and my new role as an art teacher. I feel it also has the clean sophisticated lines and subtle interest that I utilize in the graphic design work. Overall, I believe it's more catchy (... like a fish, haha, forgive the cheesiness, I've been staring at a computer too much lately).

Like I said, I've been stewing over this for quite some time, but the mountain of legwork behind switching everything over was certainly daunting. What finally gave me the giant push? Well, I've been wanting my own website (yes, a real site in addition to this lovely blog I love so much). I started searching.... and searching.... and searching. And, believe it or not, every single (dot)com combination I could think of that was close to dm designs, dani marie, dani marie designs, dani marie, etc. were all taken. THEN - the worst part - I googled those words as well.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . all new businesses should be aware of this! . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . .

I truly wish I had done this search a long time ago before ever moving forward with dm designs. Silly, silly me for not. A few weeks ago, when I googled those combination of words above, I discovered that there were several companies with similar names and another actual dm designs in California. Yea, it's annoying, and I could have let it slide.... but, the worst part - this company had ridiculously terrible reviews written about it. Everything from being lazy to bad designs to a client taking them to court! YIKES. Then, to make matters worse, I looked at google images. It was exciting to see a lot of my artwork pop up immediately. It was NOT exciting to see an insane amount of naked women pop up! What the!?!?! I was shocked and beyond frustrated. I did not want my company being associated with any of that nonsense. THIS was the big push forward I needed.

I made a list (a very long list) of all the things I needed to do including buying limefishstudio.com! :) YAY! Be on the lookout for me new website soon! There were a zillion other places I had to think about too.... including this blog, facebok, etsy, twitter, pinterest, and so on. Almost all sites are wonderful in the fact that I can simply update my name and photo.

Facebook, unfortunately, is the only case where you cannot change the actual name of your page (that option is only available if fewer than 100 people like your page) So..... I have to completely start over from scratch, but it's worth it. And I'm hoping all your current 800+ lovely fans of dm designs will make the transition with me and head over to LIKE limefish studio.... right? pretty please?

Wedding: First Look

However, lately I've been talking with several people about this topic again and wanted to share a handful of new photos and interesting article links.

Choices, choices, choices.

An amazing photographer friend, William Walker, first explained the concept of First Look to me and I thought it quite interesting. Although it is not the traditional "walk down the aisle in front of all your guests" first glance, it is an incredibly powerful moment in different ways. The concept is that prior to the ceremony, while guests are settling, the couple has a few moments alone (with the photographer of course) to enjoy an intimate First Look together. I really love the fact that those first special moments and your reactions seeing each other are caught on camera. You have the entire evening ahead filled with your closest friends and family... so why not take a minute for yourselves?

As this lovely bride says,
"Looking back, I think it was one of the best decisions we had made. We had tons of fun, and we got to enjoy each other in such an intimate way. And at the ceremony, we were both so much more relaxed." ...read more

Another great thing about this concept is that since you are getting the majority of your couple portraits taken before the ceremony, your hair & makeup will be fresh, you'll spend less time taking post-ceremony taking pictures (you'll still take the family and bridal party shots), and you may be able enjoy a little bit of your cocktail party (if you're having one). If a traditional aisle first look happens, the couple typically misses the entire cocktail party (which is just plain silly) :)

Lauren, from Every Last Detail has a post on this very topic, weighing the pro's and con's. She says she strongly wishes someone had told her about this prior to her wedding. Now, she greatly regrets she didn't get the chance.
"A First Look isn’t for everyone, and it’s not the “traditional” thing to do. But if photography is important to you, then you should seriously consider a First Look. Some of the absolute best wedding photos I have seen have been when the bride and groom have a First Look." ...read more

"Absolutely, first look all the way. We did one, and it was one of the most special parts of the day. It also relieved some of the stress/jitters, it was a moment of “oh yea, that’s why I’m doing this!” And the moments before the church door opened could be about what we were about to do and not about if he’d like my dress.The bad luck legend is totally a holdover from when people hadn’t always met their future spouses before the wedding and might freak out and run away." ...read more

"Being able to share that moment with my fiancee, without 130 people watching was incredible. I truly believe that if we hadn't done our first look before the ceremony, we wouldn't have been able to get the photos we did. Also, it didn't change the feeling of watching my beautiful bride walk down the isle. Oh, it also alleviated me from being a crying mess" - Robert.

And... I of course had to talk with our own wedding photographer, Ashely Bee, and hear her thoughts regarding the First Look. She said,

"We do our best to educate our brides of the benefits of doing a First Look: more time for photos while everyone is fresh, dedicated private moment for the bride and groom to see each other for the first time, less anxiety leading up to the ceremony, a relaxed and casual photoshoot following the ceremony during the sunset during the cocktail hour and just all around less time feeling rushed!"

Recipe: Oatmeal Cream Pies

Approximately 40 minutes
Bake at 350° F
8 Minutes per batch
Makes at least 14 sandwiches

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup granulated sugar*

1/2 cup packed brown sugar*
1/4 cup powdered sugar*

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup quick-cooking oats

2 teaspoons hot water

1/4 teaspoon salt

(1) 7 ounce jar marshmallow creme

1/2 cup shortening

*I feared these would be too sweet and used a tiny bit less than the suggested sugar amounts. They came out great (still a bit sweet, but delicious.... so I definitely suggest reducing the sugars above just a smidgen to your liking).

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet; set aside.

2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder; set aside.

3. In a large bowl, combine butter and peanut butter. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined. Beat in granulated sugar and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla until just combined. Stir in flour mixture and oats just until combined.

2. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are light brown and centers are set. Cool on cookie sheet 1 minute. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; let cool.

3. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the hot water and salt. Stir until salt is dissolves. Add marshmallow creme, shortening, and powdered sugar. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.

4. Spread marshmallow mixture on the flat side of half of the cookies. Top each frosted cookie with another cookie, flat side down. Careful: If the cookies are still warm, they will slide apart.

This recipe has been slightly adapted from an original recipe from Better Homes & Gardens.

Show & Tell: Baby D's Nursery Tree Mural

I am so pleased to share my first mural project of 2012.
One of my dear friends is due in March, and I was thrilled to paint this special nursery for little "Baby D!"

The mom originally thought of buying a wall decal, but after brainstorming we decided having a more personalized tree would be more meaningful and a bit less static. She wanted a fairly realistic "whimsical" tree with leaves that almost resembled scrapbook paper ~ what a fun and adorable challenge! To create a more sentimental level, I actually pulled colors and patterns from various fabrics, toys, and artwork around the room. I have to admit the purple pattern is my favorite (shown on the bird below). It came from a precious artwork/photo collage that hangs on the opposite wall. Some of the colors in the photos below are a bit off (the last two are probably the closes to the correct wall color... which was a beautiful blue green). After two different painting sessions and countless chats about which leaf was our favorite, the nursery was complete! I must say I am so proud of how it all turned out. I think it captures the parents' sweet nature perfectly and will hopefully be a peaceful space to Baby D to enjoy for many years to come.

After painting, I received the sweetest message from the mom,
"We really could not possibly be happier about how amazing the tree is... three different times tonight we went up to the nursery and just sat in there and gazed at it! It really is the most perfect piece for the space.... We are so incredibly grateful and happy! Thank you!!!"

This message made my heart happy.... I love what I do!

I'm sooooo happy for soon-to-be Mommy D!

Our California Engagement Photos!

YAY! I am so thrilled we found such an incredible wedding photographer, Ashley Bee, in Temecula, California, where we're getting married in August! This adorable (and super talented) wife and husband team offer engagement photos as well, and I am SO glad we took advantage of it! For all you future brides, I HIGHLY recommend this idea. Aside from having a nice collection of photos, you also get the huge bonus of a pre-wedding opportunity to get to know your photographers. I was slightly nervous (since I'm usually on the other end of the camera), but that quickly faded. They were so much fun to work with, and we're beyond thrilled with how all of the photos came out! Honestly, it just felt like we were all "hanging out" for the day with occasional poses and helpful instructions of "turn this way," "smile," ... okay, "smile less." I was only going to post a few here, but it's impossible to pick my favorite! So, instead, I'll explain our fun little experience!

We started the day off at La Jolla.... it was a beautiful day, so the area was fairly crowded.
I love how these turned out - so sweet & flirty.

I'm obsessed with bokeh, so these make me happy!

Definitely one of my favorites! It's so simple & classic... yet I love the emotion!!!!

LOVE the lighting & colors of this one. And, a pretty cute pose, I must say!

We found this adorable little house (for sale too)!

LOVE this! It was a cute little alleyway.... and I love that you can tell how windy it was!

I am obsessed with this photo! WOW, he is SO handsome!!!!! :)
We're going to print & frame this one for our home (along with the black & white of my eyes, above).

agh! I LOVE this one too! We were seriously cracking up!
And, Andrew was told (for the gazillionth time by the gazillionth person that he has a "model smile") ;) Indeed!

Next, we popped into this adorable little cupcake shop in La Jolla.... super yummy too!

Haha... they had a whole little jar of these on the counter top!

Then, we drove a few minutes to Torey Pines...
Funny story here.... we knew we wanted shots in his uniform, but he couldn't be scruffy (I of course, love the scruff, so he kept it for the first half of the photos). Then, at Torrey Pines, of course the only bathroom we could find was pretty dingy & you couldn't even see in the mirror, so he basically shaved in the dark. Totally worth it though! I LOVE all of the uniform shots so much! This one is adorable.... he snuck up on me!

WOW!!!! Simple but stunning! Love how they paired these two together too!

So cool! While Ashley was with us on the bluff... adventurous Jay snuck off far away to capture this photo.

I almost died when I saw this! I had no idea they took it and it's absolutely priceless. Simple, yet tells such a great story. Oh, and there were lots of hikers in the area. At one point we heard some shouting to another, "no, don't go that way, I think they're taking wedding photos over there."

Wow!!! Another set of favorites for me!

I love love love this one! especially how we're secluded in nature! perfect!

Now we drove down to the bottom of the trail to get some sunset beach shots.
And there's another funny story with these.... I completely trusted the photographers would have amazing ideas....
the only picture that I told them I definitely wanted was one like this (cropped of our feet, me on tiptoes, near the water).
We had to rush to get there before the sun completely set, the wind was picking up, and the water was FREEZING!!! Haha... Some of the outtakes are hillarious too because my feet completely sunk into the sand :)
And, despite the fact that the cold water ended up giving me a cold (we ended up both being sick Christmas) doesn't even matter at all. It was beyond worth it for these sunset photos.

Seriously one of my favorites. The colors are incredible. The reflection is perfect, and I love the simplicity. It truly tells a story.

Okay, again, a favorite! Andrew wanted a beach wedding, and unfortunately I did not..... I'm SO glad we decided on beach engagement photos as the compromise!!!

This is another I can picture printed huge for our home! Ashley said it, "tucks at the heartstrings." :)

In 226 days I will be marrying this handsome man.... who has truly become my best friend, and is the sweetest man I could ever even hope to meet. I never knew I could love like this. I am one lucky lady.

We can't thank our photographers enough! We will cherish these photos for a lifetime, and are so excited about the wedding.
It is a wonderful feeling to completely trust this important job to such a talented team!

Show & Tell: 'Doctor Who' Van Gogh Painting

My first custom painting for 2012 was quite a unique request! The challenge was to combine Van Gogh's Starry Night and Church at Auvers paintings while adding a twist from the show, Doctor Who. And, to include a strange alien in the church window (apparently this is from a particular episode). Although I've never seen the show, I was excited about the creative idea and love doing Van Gogh-style paintings (here's one from 2010 and another from 2011). For this painting, the client's husband is a huge fan of the Doctor Who show and this painting was going to be a surprise birthday gift. How sweet! She just gave it to him this weekend, and I'm SO thrilled to hear he loved it!

New Year's Eve Party Ideas

Who's ready for 2012?! I thought I'd share a few fun ideas in case any of you are throwing a little NYE party! Mix up your guest list and start your party no earlier than 8 or 9 (according to most online sources) to prevent a drudge of midnight anticipation. Also, starting later takes some pressure off the hostess from providing a large meal. Another neat idea is to do a post-midnight breakfast buffet instead! mmmmm ~ I'm thinking cinnamon rolls would be a big hit! And, another cute idea is to create little mini “morning after” care packages with Ibuprofen, Vitamin C powder or Gatorade for your guests ~ I'm sure they'll thank you later!

12.15.2011 - With great joy, I announce that I have just concluded my Final Research Project, An Exploration of Color Theory and Bookmaking, in partial fulfillment towards receiving my Master's of Art in Art Education from Boston University. It was a rigorous, but worthwhile journey. This little blog page is not technically related to my project, but I figured it'd be a fun way to share color inspirations with you. At a later date, I may perhaps post my lovely final report for anyone interested in browsing 66 pages of color findings. Wahoo to being completely done with grad school!!!

Today, I'm proud to showcase the lovely JACKSON ceramics | fine art:

I recently had the pleasure of working with this wonderful Virginia-based company to create a custom logo design, business cards, and Etsy shop banners! I absolutely love helping a fellow artist get their business up and running, and stop at nothing until they are beyond thrilled with the designs! We decided to showcase her beautiful ceramics on the back of each business card -- this serves as a great mini-portfolio for events (see table below) and also makes the cards interactive (customers can choose their favorite). After working on the designs, I couldn't stop thinking about the cute little caramel-colored bowl (shown farthest right above) and couldn't resist buying it for myself before anyone else could snag it. Sorry everyone :) Keep your eyes peeled for new items arriving in her shop soon! She takes custom orders too! Just send an email inquiry!

Fonts: Creative Styles & Names

I love fonts ~ especially when they're free!

During one of my first graphic design classes in college, my professor introduced us to the wonderful website dafont.com, and I've been hooked ever since. Believe or not many fonts are quite expensive. The complete te Trinite type face will run you around $3,840! If you ask me ~ that's a crazy way to spend that money! No matter what project I'm working on, I can always count on dafont to inspire great things! I was recently thinking how lost I'd be without it and thought to spread the word to those who may be unfamiliar. You can even type a word or phrase to preview in each font before downloading them. It's worth hopping over to take a peak (look at the dingbats too, they come in handy)!

Similar to the lack of updates on my 365 project, I realized my crazy-busy life has kept me from posting almost anything since being engaged! It's crazy to realize it's been over 7 months already! I feel like doing a little trip down memory lane with everything wedding-related so far.... Almost all pics & comments are pulled directly from my 365 photo project ~ nice & convenient!

YAY!!!! Andrew proposed!!!!! Such an incredible day! I am truly lucky to have this wonderful man to now call my fiancé!!

Andrew's family was so sweet to throw us a lovely Engagement Party at his mom's house in MD (with a cute pool party luau theme)! We are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day a truly special one for us. I cannot wait to marry this incredible man!

my first "paper" design for the wedding ~ thank you cards & address labels! I gave these to the wonderful friends & family who joined us at our Engagement Party! And a special thanks to Alyson & Sabri for their super thoughtful/creative gift of Dance Lessons!!! I can't wait!!!

One piece that I'm going to leave out of this particular timeline for now, is the HORRIBLE experience we had with our original venue here in Virginia - Castle Hill Cider. The short version is, at the very last second before signing, they completely screwed us over. I'd rather keep this post pleasant, and besides that messy ordeal deserves a full, lengthy story-telling post of its own (as soon as I have time!) because, believe me, I want to share that experience. It came at incredibly bad timing - On top of working full time, I was days away from starting coaching volleyball and starting my final thesis class for my masters program! I didn't have time to start over from scratch.... but we had to. I don't think I slept all week while we searched high and low (and far) for a new venue. But...... all things happen for a reason and I am SOOOO glad things worked out the way they have. Are families are so scattered, and we love to travel, so we figured why not venture out!? We narrowed it to a top choice in the Bahamas and a top choice in California, near my family. My mom and sister were super helpful and visited a handful of places to take pictures and videos. Ultimately, we fell in love with Keyways Vineyard in Temecula, CA. and began pressing forward......

One of the first wedding purchases I made was this beautiful scrapbook paper (that I later scanned for the background of our little wedding website)! It came in a huge pack or different designs, but all had the same color palette. I knew I didn't necessarily want a wedding theme, per-say... I wanted to create more of a feeling.

The font I'm using is Feel Script (which is normally like $1000... woah!) but I searched and was able to find people sharing it for free ~ how incredibly kind!

After a long day (6 hours of work followed by 6 hours with 25 seventh & eighth grade girls .... *we won our volleyball games, yay*) it's refreshing to come home & see a beautiful new illustration on the fridge whiteboard... haha, my fiance is pretty cute!

A rainy Friday..... I crouched down, umbrella in one hand, camera in the other and had just enough time to snap this one photo before a new car drove and parked right on top of the little rainbow circle!
Also, super ironic rainbow-connection to mine and Andrew's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" song (that I didn't realize until much later after posting this picture)..... considering, today, we officially booked our wedding venue!!!! The beautiful Keyways Vineyard in Temecula, California.

We finally finished making most of our Save-the-Dates, and I must admit, I love how everything looks together! The decorative paper on the clothespin magnets and the bridal party cards is the same paper I scanned and used for the background of our little wedding website. I can't wait for the rest of the fun crafty projects ahead :)


Here's a shot of Andrew's "smooches" drawing turned into our return address stickers (blurred in this pic, of course) :) I love how they turned out and especially love the extra meaning behind everything!

Also, I recently told a story about how my favorite "lucky" number has ALWAYS been 24. I never really knew why, but ever since I could remember it was "my" number. When I played volleyball in High School, the number was already taken, so I settled for half, 12, which I dubbed my "runner-up" lucky number. Like I said, there was never a known reason...... Guess when Andrew proposed? The 24th!!! Guess when we're getting married? August 24, 2012. :) Silly, I know, but it makes me smile.

Show & Tell: Vegas Painting

I love receiving all types of special custom painting requests and was recently given quite a big challenge -- a four-foot canvas of the Vegas Skyline done in a "painterly-style"... The giant blank canvas was a bit intimidating at first, but I admit once I found my rhythm it was quite enjoyable! After a few very late-night painting sessions (I have the bad habit of being most inspired after midnight!). My client was planning to gift this to her sister as a house-warming gift, and I had to laugh when I dropped it off and her husband instantly pouted that they couldn't keep it for themselves -- I took it as a compliment! And.... within hours, they'd shown friends and peaked someone's interest in having a New York one painted too ~ how fun!
